Nest Updates

September 21, 2017

I just got an email announcing Nest’s Secure alarm system. It really solidified the “take something that has been around for decades and then make it pretty” business plan.

Sure, I’m oversimplifying. They do many things better than past systems. It’s apparent though that they take industries that have been around for decades and rethink them.

I have a Nest Thermostat with a second in the form of the Thermostat E on the way. Did I need them? Certainly not. But I am happy to have them and I am happy to see my usage over time and be able to easily manage that.

The big thing that Nest proves is that people care about design and that design can make a business. That’s not to say they haven’t improved function, but if the function is all or mostly there, then design can really make a business thrive.
