Stupid Dress

February 27, 2015

The internet has been blowing up about this stupid dress. I don’t like to interject on these things, but the level of certainty everywhere is bugging me.

Stupid Dress

Is it white and gold? Blue and black? Local news has talked about it, scientists have been brought in, Taylor Swift jumped in.

Apparently the real dress is blue and black. That’s fine. Lighting can do weird things to colors. Who knows what camera the picture was taken with or if some kind of filter was added. That’s also fine. The main issue is what color does the picture depict.

Here is a sample of the gold or black is this color:

And a sample of the blue or white color:

I don’t get it. Based on these, it’s a gold-brown and a pale blue. And the gold-brown is far more distinctive and closer to gold than black. And the pale blue is closer to white than blue (while still showing strongly blue).

It seems pretty obvious it’s gold and whitish-blue in the picture. Now let’s all accept that we were wrong and eyes don’t deserve all the credit we give them.

Edit with additional thoughts:

To clarify: I can see where people get blue, and I understand that in real life, the dress is black and blue, but in that picture, there is no black. Are there so few goths now that people don’t know what black clothing looks like?

More seriously, if nothing else, and if we didn’t already realize it, hopefully people realize that cameras and eyes are not reliable and can be manipulated based on outside circumstances.

Edit a few hours later:

Oh god! Now I can’t unsee black and blue! What’s happening to my eyes? Why do they betray me so? I’m over this.
