2016 Predictions
January 6, 2016After replying to Fred Wilson’s predictions for 2016, I wanted to write up a few of my own.
- We’ll see an increase in smaller, more focused, and less glamorous tech startups. Shipping is one area that comes to mind. Industries that may be behind in the tech curve and are not “cool” will get much more attention.
- Twitter will make major changes and face a very vocal backlash with no change in user behavior. I’m thinking longer messages, for example.
- There will be major moves, including ill-advised ones, by large, traditional media companies in an attempt to combat or alleviate the pain of losing viewership.
- Remote working and coworking spaces will only become more popular as companies attempt to save costs by not investing in office spaces, hiring freelancers, and embracing asynchronous working.
- There will be a large congressional fight over autonomous cars that will make the public more aware of the benefits (and dangers) of automation to our economy. There will be vocal minorities fighting to stop the legalization process because of job losses, but will use the specter of it being an unproven or dangerous technology and states’ rights to slow the process down.
Maybe that last one is thinking too big. It was only five instead of ten. We’ll see how 2016 shapes up.
